2 more witnesses testify in former US Ambassador Bernicat Convoy attack case

Two more witnesses testified on Sunday in the case over the attack on the motorcade of former US Ambassador Marcia Bernicat, bringing the total number of witnesses examined to nine out of 28.

Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Nazmin Akter recorded the testimonies of Assistant Sub-Inspector Grish Chandra Barman and ASI Azmal Hossain, court officials said.

The accused, who are currently on bail, appeared before the court. Following the witnesses depositions, defense lawyer Gazi Faisal Islam cross-examined them. The court later fixed October 14 for the next hearing.

The nine accused include former Mohammadpur unit Chhatra League president Naimul Hasan, Mohammad Ishtiaq Mahmud, Firoz Mahmud, Mir Amzad Hossain, Saju Islam, Rajibul Islam, Shahidul Alam Khan, Siam and Ali Ahmed.

Bernicat came under attack on August 4, 2018, while returning from a dinner at the Mohammadpur residence of Badiul Alam Majumdar, secretary of the civil society organisation Shujan.

Majumdar filed the case with Mohammadpur Police Station on August 10 that year.

Police submitted the charge sheet against nine accused in January 2021 and the trial began in March 2022. Following further investigation ordered by the court, the Detective Branch submitted a supplementary charge sheet against the same nine accused in September 2023.

On November 19, 2023, the court framed charges against the accused, paving the way for the trial.
