PWD employees place 9-point demand in Dhaka

The Bangladesh Public Works Department (PWD) Employee Union has demanded the implementation of a permanent setup for field-level employees along with a nine-point charter of demands.

Md Badrul Alam Sabuj, General Secretary of the union, placed the demands at a press conference held at the organization’s office in Purta Bhaban, Segunbagicha, in the capital. Union President Md Jasim Uddin presided over the event.

Reading out a written statement, Badrul Alam Sabuj urged the immediate implementation of the High Court judgment regarding the regularization of work-based temporary staff into permanent positions. He also demanded guaranteed promotions for employees at all levels within the Public Works Department.

He further called for the regularization of daily-wage and voucher-based workers into temporary regular posts in line with relevant court rulings.

‘The outsourcing recruitment system in the PWD must be abolished. Direct recruitment should be conducted through the department, and the relevant posts must be transferred to the revenue budget,’ he said. He also urged the authorities to eliminate discrimination within the department and ensure the right to trade union practices.

Additionally, the union demanded the restoration of annual uniform distribution for all employees, halting the eviction of staff living in tin-shed houses without providing alternative accommodation, and the prompt eviction of illegal occupants.

Their demands also included maintaining cleanliness and necessary repairs in residential quarters, as well as launching tree plantation drives to protect the environment.
