Mumbai cop relieved of duty over drug threat to students

A Mumbai police officer has been relieved of his duties after allegedly threatening student protesters with fake drug charges. The incident has sparked intense controversy. Kolkata24x7 reported.

The police action follows a viral video that triggered a formal investigation by Mumbai Police. As an initial measure, the accused officer has been removed from his current posting.

In the viral video, the officer is allegedly seen warning student protesters that if they return to demonstrate, they will be framed in narcotics cases and spends the rest of their lives in jail.

According to allegations, he threatened to plant drugs on the students and press charges under narcotics laws if they took part in protests.

Police sources identified the accused constable as Pawan Sangle. He was assigned to the Motor Vehicles Department and posted at Sion Police Station.

A Mumbai Police official said an investigation into the incident has been ordered. Pawan Sangle has been removed from his current responsibilities pending full verification of the facts. Further action will be taken based on the findings after the probe concludes, police added.

The controversy comes amidst nation-wide demonstrations in support of the ongoing student movement led by the Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) at Jantar Mantar in Delhi, with protests held in Mumbai and several other cities.

Mumbai Police is currently investigating the legitimacy of the video and authenticity of the statement.
