HC bans unpermitted sleeper buses on highways

The High Court rejected an application from bus owners seeking permission to operate sleeper buses on highways.

A High Court bench led by Justice KM Hafizul Alam issued the order on Wednesday (September 9). The court ruled that only buses holding valid permits from the Bangladesh Road Transport Authority (BRTA) can operate on roads.

BRTA lawyer Md Rafiual Islam stated in court that modifying vehicle technical specifications violates Section 40 of the Road Transport Act 2018. He emphasized that under Section 84, violating technical specifications is a punishable offense carrying up to three years imprisonment and a fine of Tk 3 lakh.

The lawyer added that Section 28 of the act strictly prohibits any vehicle from operating without a valid route permit. Since the BRTA has not issued route permits for sleeper buses, the court refused to grant any special authorization for their operation.
