Israel has had an aggressive reaction to the UK government's move to prohibit the trading of goods made in Israeli settlements in the occupied West Bank, bringing bilateral relations to a low point in years, according to experts.

Israel reacted to the move by shutting down the British consulate in East Jerusalem and revoking British officials’ credentials from the International Gaza Support Centre. The move came following coordinated steps by the UK along with 11 other countries including France, Spain and Canada against Israeli settlements.

In addition to prohibiting trade with Israeli settlements, the UK will impose sanctions on companies supporting construction and financing in such settlements. It will limit arms sales contributing to Israel’s occupation.

Foreign Secretary Ed Miliband described the new policy as one in accordance with the 2024 International Court of Justice ruling which declared Israel's occupation of Palestinian territories as illegal. He also criticized violence carried out by settlers in West Bank.

Palestinian officials have praised the steps taken by the UK government as a new era in relations between UK and Palestinians. However, analysts believe that this may not prove sufficient to stop the expansion of settlements or put an end to Israel's occupation.

These issues are further indications of increasing disagreement between Britain and the United States, Israel’s principal foreign friend, on the question of Israeli settlements.
