Ronaldo set for emotional farewell match on home soil

Portugal superstar Cristiano Ronaldo is reportedly set to play his final match for the national team on home ground, with the 2026 FIFA World Cup expected to be his last major international tournament. Although the legendary forward has not officially announced his retirement, reports suggest he could bid farewell to international football after Portugal’s upcoming UEFA Nations League clash against Wales.

Ronaldo, widely regarded as one of Portugal’s greatest-ever footballers, has given strong indications that the end of his international career is approaching. According to a report by football outlet Goal.com, the match against Wales on September 24 could become the 41-year-old’s final appearance in Portugal colours. The game is scheduled to be played at Sporting Lisbon’s home stadium, Estádio José Alvalade.

Newly appointed Portugal head coach Jorge Jesus is reportedly not in favour of making sudden major changes to the squad. Instead, he wants to give Ronaldo the opportunity to receive a fitting farewell in front of his home supporters.

Ronaldo holds the world record for the most international appearances, with 233 matches, and is the highest scorer in men’s international football with 146 goals. During his illustrious career with Portugal, he has won the UEFA Euro 2016 title as well as the UEFA Nations League trophies in 2019 and 2025.
