Govt to create university industry diaspora linkage for innovation: Mahdi Amin

The government will establish a tripartite ecosystem connecting universities, industries and the Bangladeshi diaspora to boost innovation, research and skilled workforce development, Prime Minister’s Adviser and Chief Spokesperson Mahdi Amin said on Saturday.

Speaking at the National Semiconductor Symposium and BEAR Summit 2026 at the National Science and Technology Museum in Dhaka, Mahdi Amin said Bangladesh has a large pool of students and universities but lacks effective collaboration between academia and industry.

He said the government aims to bridge this gap by engaging the expertise of expatriate Bangladeshis and creating stronger partnerships among universities, industries and global professionals.

“The initiative is not limited to the semiconductor sector; it will help build a broader ecosystem for all industries by utilizing Bangladesh’s demographic advantage and young talent,” he said.

Mahdi Amin said the government plans to expand competitions, training programmes, academic clubs and industry-focused initiatives to encourage innovation among students.

He also emphasized the need to transform “brain drain” into “brain circulation” by creating platforms that connect Bangladeshi professionals abroad with local universities and communities.

The adviser said greater collaboration through internships, joint research projects, summer schools and visiting lectures would provide students with practical experience and industry exposure.

Acknowledging the shortage of research facilities and laboratories in many universities, he said the government has allocated significant funds in the current budget to improve research infrastructure, laboratories and higher education facilities.

He added that specialized research centres would be established and applied research would be promoted to address Bangladesh’s development challenges.

The two-day summit, themed “Building Bangladesh’s Semiconductor Future Through Global Partnerships,” is jointly organized by the Bangladesh Semiconductor Industry Association (BSIA), the Ministry of Science and Technology, and the Silicon River Bangladesh initiative. Prime Minister Tarique Rahman inaugurated the event earlier in the day.
