Jamaat Ameer reiterates call for referendum implementation

SYLHET, July 25: Jamaat-e-Islami Ameer and Opposition Leader in JS Dr Shafiqur Rahman on Saturday reiterated his call for immediate implementation of national referendum, threatening that the opposition's movement would continue until the people's mandate and July Charter are fully implemented.

Addressing a divisional rally of the 11-party alliance at the historic Government Alia Madrasah Ground in Sylhet, he said the referendum reflected the people's demand for political reforms and warned against ignoring the outcome.

"The people voted 'Yes' for change and reform. We will not allow the verdict of nearly 70 per cent of voters to be dishonoured. We want the referendum mandate implemented without delay," he said, adding that Bangladesh must never return to authoritarian rule.

Jamaat chief also criticised ruling BNP alleging that it was following the political practices of past Awami League government by politicising institutions and encouraging corruption

Urging the government to implement the referendum, he said that his party would continue its movement alongside July movement activists and the families of those killed. He also called on supporters in Sylhet to prepare for future political programmes in Dhaka.

He also demanded upgrading of Osmani Airport into a full-fledged international airport, completion of the six-lane highway project, establishment of an engineering university in Sylhet and full operationalisation of Sylhet Medical University.

 Opposition Chief Whip and NCP Convener Nahid Islam MP alleged the government for failure in honouring the referendum. Ignoring the referendum July Charter could undermine public trust, he added.
