BD gains edge as US keeps tariff at 10pc: AmCham Prez

The United States has not imposed any additional tariff on Bangladesh, as the previous temporary 10 per cent tariff has been replaced with another 10 per cent tariff under a different legal framework, American Chamber of Commerce in Bangladesh (AmCham) President Syed Mohammad Kamal has said.

Kamal said Bangladesh remains in the lowest US tariff tier alongside countries such as India, Pakistan, Malaysia and the United Kingdom.

He noted that several of Bangladesh's major export competitors, including China, Vietnam and Thailand, will face a higher tariff of 12.5 per cent.

"This differential gives Bangladesh a relative competitive advantage in the US market by improving its position against key rival exporting countries," he said.

According to Kamal, the latest US tariff decision preserves Bangladesh's competitiveness in its largest export market and places the country in a stronger position relative to several competing exporters.
