The United States' decision to retain the additional tariff on Bangladeshi exports at 10 per cent, instead of increasing it, has brought a measure of stability for exporters, although higher trade costs remain a concern, BGMEA Senior Vice President Inamul Haq Khan Bablu has said.

"The decision is less disruptive than many had feared, as businesses have already adjusted to the 10 per cent tariff over the past five months," Bablu told The Daily Observer.

He noted that while the tariff remains unchanged, it continues to be imposed in addition to existing product-specific US import duties, particularly on ready-made garments.

"This means Bangladeshi exporters still face higher trade costs, underscoring the need to improve efficiency and productivity to remain competitive in the global market," he said.

According to the BGMEA leader, certainty in trade policy is often as valuable as lower tariffs for the apparel industry.

"A stable tariff environment enables exporters to plan production, negotiate contracts and manage pricing with greater confidence. It also reduces uncertainty that can discourage investment and long-term business decisions," he said.

Bablu said maintaining the current tariff helps preserve Bangladesh's competitive position in its largest export market. However, he stressed that policymakers and industry leaders should continue engaging with the United States to secure better market access.
