34 killed in coal mine explosion in Pakistan

At least 34 workers have been killed in a massive explosion at a coal mine in Sorange, Quetta, in Pakistan’s Balochistan province.

The Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) said rescuers recovered eight more bodies from the collapsed mine, while some workers may still remain trapped underground.

Rescue teams from the PDMA, rescue agencies and the Mines and Mineral Resources Department are working round the clock to clear the rubble and reach those trapped.

Authorities said the explosion was caused by gas accumulation inside the mine, triggering a section to collapse and trapping workers beneath the debris.

The Balochistan government has announced Rs 500,000 in financial assistance for the family of each worker killed in the accident.

Balochistan Chief Minister Mir Sarfaraz Bugti ordered an immediate investigation and sought a detailed report from the Mines and Mineral Resources Department.

He called for an impartial probe and said legal action would be taken if negligence or violations of safety rules were found. He also ordered strict enforcement of safety regulations in coal mines across the province to prevent similar accidents.
