OpenAI is reportedly set to introduce a major update to ChatGPT’s Advanced Voice Mode. The company is preparing to unveil a new “Smart Voice Mode” designed to make conversations with ChatGPT more natural, faster and more human-like.

The company says two new voice models"GPT-Live-One and GPT-Live-One Mini"are being activated. The new models are expected to make AI conversations smoother, more responsive and closer to the experience of talking to another person.

New Features: One of the key features of the update is that ChatGPT will no longer have to wait for a user to finish speaking before responding. Users will be able to ask questions or interrupt the AI in the middle of a conversation, and the AI will be able to recognise the interruption and respond appropriately.

This is expected to create a more natural conversational experience, similar to the way people communicate with one another in real life.

Who Will Get Access?: ChatGPT Plus, Pro and other paid subscribers will be able to use the GPT-Live-One model. Meanwhile, the free version of ChatGPT will get GPT-Live-One Mini as its new default voice model.

Previously, voice conversations relied on a separate, multi-step technology. First, a user’s speech was converted into text. The AI then generated a response, which was subsequently converted back into speech.

The new GPT-Live model, however, will handle the entire process simultaneously. As a result, users will receive responses more quickly, while conversations are expected to become much more fluid and natural.

Advanced Analysis in Voice Mode: OpenAI says the new voice models will be better at understanding complex questions. When necessary, they will be able to rely on upgraded AI models such as the GPT-5.5 version to perform deeper analysis, conduct web searches and handle other complex tasks.

The quality of live translation will also improve with the new models.

Users will be able to translate conversations instantly across several languages, making multilingual communication easier and more seamless.

However, OpenAI has acknowledged that the models have limitations. Pronunciation and local accents or tones have not yet been fully mastered in every language.

Demonstrations of translation in some languages have reportedly shown that the pronunciation can still sound somewhat artificial.

Voice AI Could Become the Future of Computing: Voice-based AI could eventually become the primary way people interact with computers. Several companies, including Apple and Amazon, are already working on similar technologies. The broader goal is to make AI safer, easier to understand and more accessible as voice-based interaction becomes an increasingly important part of everyday computing.
