Cleanliness Is a Shared Responsibility

Dear Sir,

A clean environment is not only the responsibility of the government and sanitation workers but also a shared obligation of every citizen. Every day, our roads are littered with plastic bags, bottles, food packets and other waste, despite the tireless efforts of street cleaners. Regrettably, many people continue to throw garbage indiscriminately and then blame the authorities for the unclean surroundings.

Alongside greater public awareness, we need better waste management, including more covered dustbins, regular waste collection and strict enforcement against littering. Technology, such as CCTV cameras where appropriate, can also help identify habitual offenders while respecting citizens’ privacy. At the same time, schools and families must teach children that cleanliness is a civic responsibility.

Countries like Japan and Singapore have demonstrated that a culture of cleanliness begins with individual behaviour. Bangladesh can achieve the same if citizens, local authorities and the government work together. A clean street reflects not only a beautiful city but also a responsible and civilised nation.
