Adabar murder: Expelled BNP leader sent to jail

A Dhaka court on Sunday rejected a seven-day remand plea for expelled BNP leader Monowar Hossain Jibon, alias Ledu Hasan, and ordered him to be sent to jail in a case over the murder of Adabar BNP leader Abul Bashar Badshah.

Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Mahbub Alam passed the order after police produced Ledu before the court, seeking his remand for interrogation.

The prosecution said the complainant submitted an affidavit claiming the arrested person was not the accused named in the case. Following the submission, the court denied the remand request and sent him to jail.

Ledu was arrested by RAB-2 on July 28 from Mohammadia Housing Society in Mohammadpur. RAB said he is facing 32 criminal cases, including murder, arms and narcotics charges.

Investigators allege that Ledu is one of the key accused in the July 1 killing of Abul Bashar Badshah, general secretary of the BNP's Nabodoy Housing Unit. Statements recorded under Section 164 of the Code of Criminal Procedure from other arrested suspects reportedly identified him as the person who supplied the weapon used by the main attacker.

According to the case, the murder stemmed from a dispute following a local mediation over an altercation after Brazil's FIFA World Cup victory celebrations. Badshah and another man, Saddam Hossain, were attacked with sharp weapons near the Nabodoy Housing intersection. Badshah later died at Dhaka Medical College Hospital, while Saddam sustained critical injuries.

Badshah's wife, Smriti Akter, filed the case with Adabar Police Station. Court sources said 10 people have so far been arrested in connection with the murder.
