A gas pipeline in Katiadi Upazila has been leaking for nearly two months following an alleged attempt to install an illegal connection, raising safety concerns among nearby residents.

Locals alleged that a lime factory tried to steal gas by puncturing the main pipeline to set up an unauthorized connection. The attempt was reportedly abandoned after residents became aware of it, leaving the damaged pipeline leaking continuously. The factory owner and workers have since gone into hiding.

The leak, near the Arial Khan River in Masuya Kazirchar, has become more visible as rising river water has exposed streams of gas bubbles. Residents say they fear a possible accident and complain that the escaping gas is affecting nearby homes.

Some locals also alleged that officials from Titas Gas may have been involved in the illegal connection. Titas has denied any wrongdoing but said the allegation would be investigated.

Shamim Hossain, operations manager of Titas Gas in Bhaluka, said repair work has been delayed due to the river’s strong current. He added that the damaged pipeline is being repaired and action will be taken if anyone, including Titas personnel, is found responsible.

Katiadi Model Police Station Officer-in-Charge Rafiqul Islam said police suspect people linked to the nearby lime factory may have been involved. He said Titas has lodged a complaint, and legal action will follow if a case is filed.
