Bangladeshi youth dies after alleged torture in Libya

A 25-year-old Bangladeshi man has died in Libya after allegedly being tortured by a human trafficking gang while attempting to travel to Italy, according to his family and local sources.

The deceased was identified as Iqbal Hossain Madbar, son of Motaleb Madbar of Sarkarchar village in Shibchar upazila of Madaripur. His family received news of his death through brokers on Thursday (August 6).

According to family and local sources, Iqbal was allegedly taken to Libya a few months ago after brokers Sagar Madbar and Kamrul Madbar, from Chhelenama village in Banshkandi union, promised to send him to Italy. His family reportedly paid Tk20 lakh to the brokers.

After travelling through several countries, Iqbal reached Libya, where he was allegedly held captive and tortured by a gang. The gang reportedly demanded a ransom of Tk12 lakh, and the family borrowed money to pay another Tk80 lakh.

However, when the family could not pay the remaining Tk4 lakh demanded, Iqbal was allegedly subjected to further torture. He became seriously ill and later died without receiving treatment, according to his family.

Iqbal’s father, Motaleb Madbar, said, “I sold my land and took loans to send my son abroad. Now my son is gone, and we are finished too. How can we accept the grief of losing our son?”

He demanded that his son’s body be brought back to Bangladesh and sought exemplary punishment for the two brokers.

The accused brokers went into hiding after the death was reported, so their statements could not be obtained.

Shibchar Police Station Officer-in-Charge Kamal Hossain said legal action would be taken if a written complaint is received.
