Titas pipeline leak repaired, gas supply returning to normal

The leak in the Titas Gas transmission pipeline beneath the Arial Khan River in Katiadi upazila of Kishoreganj has been repaired, with gas supply to Kishoreganj town and surrounding areas gradually returning to normal.

Kishoreganj Titas Gas Transmission and Distribution PLC Zonal Sales Office Manager Md Mosharraf Hossain confirmed the development on Thursday (August 6).

Locals said gas bubbles were first noticed under the river in the Kazirchar area of Masuya Union about two months ago. The leak intensified in recent weeks, with gas reportedly emerging from the water under high pressure.

Titas Gas authorities said the pipeline had been punctured in an attempt to install an illegal gas connection. Engineers used a special technique to remove water around the pipeline and permanently seal the roughly 1.5-inch hole through three layers of piling and welding.

Md Shamim Hossain, regional operations manager of Titas Gas’s Mymensingh Division, said the repair work was challenging but the leak had been successfully sealed. Security tape will also be applied to reinforce the pipeline.

Gas supply had been disrupted in parts of Kishoreganj during the repair work, but it has now started returning to normal.

Titas Gas officials estimated that gas worth Tk 500,000-600,000 was being wasted daily in recent days due to the leak. However, officials involved in the repair work, speaking on condition of anonymity, estimated the loss at around Tk 2 million a day over the past two weeks, putting the total potential loss at Tk 20 million.

Titas Gas filed a case with Katiadi police on August 4, naming Delwar Hossain Talukder, owner of a local lime factory, as the prime accused, along with landowner Sumon Mia and several unidentified people.

Police arrested two landowners, Sultan Uddin Akand and Sumon Mia, during a raid on August 5. Efforts are underway to arrest the prime accused.

Katiadi Model Police Station OC Rafiqul Islam confirmed the arrests and said efforts to apprehend the prime accused were continuing.
