Bangladeshi travellers can now pay in taka for overseas tour packages from tour operators registered with the Tour Operators Association of Bangladesh (TOAB), under a new Bangladesh Bank directive.

The central bank issued a circular on Sunday allowing registered TOAB member tour operators to collect payments in taka and remit the equivalent amount in foreign currency directly to overseas service providers through banks.

The facility will apply to TOAB-member tour operators that have valid agreements or business arrangements with foreign tour operators, hotels or destination management companies.

According to the directive, authorised dealer (AD) banks can remit foreign currency for genuine overseas travel services, including accommodation and transportation, upon application by eligible tour operators.

Outside the regular annual travel quota, up to $3,000 per traveller may be remitted in each calendar year. Tour operators must maintain full transaction details against the traveller’s passport number.

Travellers must also provide a written declaration confirming that they have not exceeded the prescribed annual limit through another tour operator.

For packages costing more than $3,000, payment must be collected in foreign currency through an international card. AD banks may provide acquiring services for such transactions.

Before remitting the foreign currency, AD banks must verify relevant documents, including invoices, agreements, detailed itineraries, passenger lists and proof of payment received in taka.

Banks must also submit details of the remittance to Bangladesh Bank within seven days of transferring the foreign currency.

Tourism sector entrepreneurs have welcomed the decision, saying it will make overseas tour package payments easier and more transparent and could support the development of Bangladesh’s outbound tourism sector.
