NOAKHALI, Aug 09: Gas supply has been suspended across Laxmipur district and to several CNG filling stations and industrial consumers in Noakhali after a leak was detected in an underwater gas pipeline in Begumganj upazila.

The disruption has affected around 7,000 residential consumers, 150 commercial consumers and four CNG stations"two in Begumganj and two in Lakshmipur"causing significant hardship for households and transport operators.

The leak was detected on Friday afternoon in the Kendurbag area of Begumganj, beneath a bridge beside the Lakshmipur-Noakhali regional highway. For safety reasons, gas supply through the affected pipeline was shut off on Saturday night.

The suspension has particularly affected households in Lakshmipur, where residents are facing difficulties with cooking. Meanwhile, the closure of gas-dependent CNG stations has disrupted public transport and caused inconvenience to passengers.

According to the Noakhali office of Bakhrabad Gas Distribution Company Limited (BGDCL), repair work began on Sunday morning. Officials said they hoped to restore gas supply by midnight on Sunday, provided the work proceeds as planned.
