Corruption has caused cooperative societies across the country to lose their former standing, President Mirza Fakhrul Islam has said.

He made the remarks at a discussion and award ceremony marking National Cooperative Day at the Osmani Memorial Auditorium in Dhaka on Sunday morning.

The president said corruption within cooperative organisations had damaged most societies. He stressed the need to remove existing obstacles to the development of the cooperative sector and update relevant laws to meet current needs.

He also called for effective measures to facilitate the marketing of products made by cooperative societies and curb the influence of middlemen.

Referring to the challenges facing the country, the president urged people to remain united to overcome what he described as various conspiracies against the nation.

He expressed hope that the country would move forward if Prime Minister Tarique Rahman's plans and objectives were implemented.
