At least 13 people, including a child, were killed and 39 others injured in a Ukrainian drone attack on the Russian republic of Tatarstan, Russian authorities said Monday.

The attack targeted industrial and civilian sites in Nizhnekamsk, located more than 1,100 kilometres from the Ukrainian border. The city is home to major oil-refining and petrochemical facilities.

Tatarstan head Rustam Minnikhanov confirmed the attack and expressed condolences to the families of those killed. Nizhnekamsk Mayor Radmir Belyayev described the incident as a tragedy and announced a period of mourning.

Russia’s Investigative Committee said civilians not involved in military operations were among those affected. Moscow also said its air-defence systems had intercepted more than 450 Ukrainian drones overnight.

Ukraine has not officially commented on the attack.

The strike comes as Kyiv has increasingly carried out long-range drone attacks on Russian energy and industrial facilities that it says support Moscow’s war effort. Russia, meanwhile, continues to launch large-scale drone and missile attacks on Ukrainian cities.
