Tarique Rahman calls party meeting to finalise presidential candidate

BNP Chairman and Prime Minister Tarique Rahman called a meeting of the party's Standing Committee on Thursday morning (August 13) to finalize the candidate for the upcoming presidential election.

The party's candidate for the presidency will be finalised during the meeting, following which nomination papers will be officially submitted.

Party sources said internal discussions at the policy-making level have been ongoing regarding the selection of the presidential nominee.

With August 13 set as the deadline for submitting nomination papers for the presidential race, BNP plans to complete the selection and submit the paperwork on the final day.

When asked about the matter on Wednesday night, BNP Media Cell member Shairul Kabir Khan said, "We will announce the decision once it is finalized in the meeting."

Earlier, BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir emerged as a widely discussed candidate for the presidential nomination within party circles.

However, no official announcement has been made yet.

The party's presidential candidate is expected to be formally announced following Thursday's Standing Committee meeting.
