Motorists will now be automatically fined for violating traffic laws on highways, including exceeding the prescribed speed limit.

The Home Minister made the remarks as the chief guest at the inauguration of the modern AI camera-based “Auto Fine System” at the Highway Police Command and Control Monitoring Centre in Meghnaghat, Sonargaon, Narayanganj, on Tuesday afternoon.

To ensure road safety, strengthen traffic discipline on highways and ensure swift, transparent and technology-driven action against law violators, 490 AI cameras have been installed along a nearly 250-kilometre stretch from Signboard in Narayanganj to Chattogram City Gate. The installation was carried out under the “Enhancing Highway Police Capacity” project to bring the Dhaka-Chattogram highway under technology-based surveillance.

The event was presided over by Highway Police Additional Inspector General Faruk Ahmed. Among those present as special guests were Bangladesh Road Transport Federation President and lawmaker Shamsur Rahman Shimul Biswas, Narayanganj-3 lawmaker Azharul Islam Mannan, Senior Secretary of the Ministry of Home Affairs Manzur Morshed Chowdhury, the Deputy Commissioner of Narayanganj, and officials from various law enforcement agencies and political leaders.

The minister said, ''fines would be sent immediately to the BRTA database. An SMS would then be sent to the registered owner of the vehicle. The owner would be able to pay the fine easily online or through a mobile phone. In cases of repeated violations, cancellation of the vehicle’s registration would be considered in accordance with existing BRTA laws.:Automatic fines for traffic law violations, including speeding on highways: Home Minister

Officials concerned said the introduction of the auto fine system would reduce direct police intervention in enforcing traffic laws while increasing transparency and accountability throughout the process. The option to pay fines through mobile banking would also speed up the collection process. At the same time, greater compliance with traffic laws is expected to reduce highway accidents and further strengthen discipline and safety in road transport.
