A fire broke out on the third floor of the Air Traffic Control (ATC) building at Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose International Airport in Kolkata around 4am on Tuesday (18 August).
Airport staff noticed smoke and sparks and immediately alerted the fire service. The blaze intensified before firefighters arrived, generating thick smoke in the area.
Three fire engines reached the scene and brought the fire under control. Airport authorities said the incident caused no significant damage.
The cause of the fire is under investigation. Fire officials suspect that a short circuit in neon lights installed to decorate the building for India's Independence Day celebrations may have triggered the blaze.
