Prime Minister’s Adviser Dr Zahed Ur Rahman on Tuesday (August 18) said the ongoing gas shortage is a long-standing accumulated problem that will take at least two years to fully resolve.

Speaking as the chief guest at an exchange meeting at Shilpacharya Zainul Abedin Auditorium in Mymensingh District Council, he noted that the government is implementing short, medium, and long-term plans to ease public suffering.

Responding to opposition protests over the gas crisis, Dr Zahed Ur Rahman said people are indeed suffering, and the Prime Minister herself expressed regret over the situation. He added that while the public's distress is real, blaming the current administration for it is unfair.

He explained that the current energy crisis stems from prolonged issues compounded by a recent accident. He noted that even after resolving immediate causes, a large gap remains between gas demand and supply.

The adviser stated that despite two key plants operating, the national supply remains short by nearly 100 crore cubic feet per day due to years of neglect.

He disclosed that initiatives are underway to connect Bhola's gas to the national grid alongside efforts to purchase Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG).

Dr Zahed Ur Rahman also highlighted onshore gas exploration efforts, stating that surveys suggest potential reserves of 40 to 50 trillion cubic feet on land, against the country's annual demand of 1.3 to 1.4 trillion cubic feet.

Mymensingh Divisional Commissioner SM Humayun Kabir presided over the meeting, where Md Abu Wahab Akand and District Council Administrator Syed Emran Salehin Prince spoke as special guests.
