A Dhaka court on Tuesday sent Tejgaon Thana Sramik League president Mohammad Abul Kashem Patowary, alias ‘Hatkata’ Kashem, to jail in a case filed over an attack on the motorcade of former prime minister Khaleda Zia.
Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Albiruni Mir passed the order following a petition by the case’s investigation officer, Tejgaon Police Inspector Abdul Hannan.
Kashem’s lawyer Masud Khan sought bail, claiming that his client was neither involved in the incident nor named in the first information report and had been arrested for political harassment.
According to police, the attack took place on April 20, 2015, when Khaleda Zia was campaigning in Kawran Bazar for BNP-backed mayoral candidate Tabith Awal during the Dhaka North City Corporation election.
Several vehicles in her convoy were vandalised and a number of BNP activists and members of her security team were injured.
Police said Kashem was arrested from Kawran Bazar on Monday based on information from a reliable source. They claimed preliminary questioning found evidence of his direct involvement in the attack.
Police are expected to seek his remand for further questioning. They also said Kashem faces several other cases, including murder and attempted murder, in Dhaka.
