One to die, three get life term for murders in Jhenaidah, Sirajganj

Separate courts in Jhenaidah and Sirajganj in two days sentenced one person to death and three to life imprisonment over separate murder incidents.

JHENAIDAH: Jhenaidah District Sessions Judge and Special Sessions Judge Md Masud Ali on Thursday afternoon sentenced a son to death and fined Tk 50,000 and his father to life imprisonment and fined Tk 20,000 for murdering farmer Nayeb Ali in Kaliganj Upazila of the district in 2025. 

The convicts are Alamin Patwari, son of Yunus Patwari of Maliat Village in Maliat Union of Kaliganj, and Yunus Patwari, son of late Osman Ali Patwari.

Special PP of the Court, Advocate Akidul Islam, said that Nayeb Ali was killed with a bamboo stick behind the house of Toaz Uddin of Maliat Village on May 28, 2025. A murder case was filed with Kaliganj Police Station on that day, accusing the son, father and mother.

After the police investigation, the mother Rashida Begum was acquitted. The investigating officer submitted the charge sheet to the court on August 18, 2025. The proceedings of the case, which lasted only seven working days, were completed. The verdict in the case was declared on Thursday.

SIRAJGANJ: A court in the district on Tuesday sentenced two people, including wife of slain Juba Dal leader Selim Reza Sujon, to life in prison for Sujon’s murder.

Judge Shayla Sharmin of the Sirajganj Additional District and Sessions Court-1 also sentenced each convict to three more months in prison if they fail to pay Tk 1 lakh fine.

The convicted are Sujon's wife, Umme Salma Tithi, who is absconding, and Monirul Islam, son of Belal Fakir of Dargapara Village in Shahjadpur Upazila of the district. Monirul was present in court when the verdict was declared.

The court acquitted two other defendants, Rashedul Islam, son of former Shahjadpur Municipal mayor Nazrul Islam, and Tithi's brother Piyas Hossain.

According to case documents, Sujon, organising secretary of the town unit of Juba Dal, was killed by having his throat cut while he slept at his home on June 1, 2015.

Sujon's mother, Majeda Begum, filed a murder case accusing Tithi and Piyas and several unidentified people.

Prosecutors said Tithi and Monirul later gave confessional statements saying they killed Sujon with a machete to pursue their extramarital relationship.

Additional PP Shamsujjoha Shahenshah confirmed the verdict.
