Separate courts in Joypurhat and Narayanganj districts on Thursday sentenced six persons to life imprisonment in separate drug cases.
JOYPURHAT: A court in Joypurhat on Thursday sentenced three men to life in prison in two separate drug cases and fined each Tk 10,000, with an additional six months in prison if they fail to pay the fines.
Joypurhat Additional District and Sessions Judge Md Hasibul Haque declared the verdict in the absence of the defendants, who are absconding after being released on bail. The court also issued arrest and sentence warrants against them, said Senior Assistant Public Prosecutor ATM Mizanur Rahman.
In one case, Dipjol alias Dipu and Shahed Ali, both from Badalgachhi Upazila of Naogaon, were convicted after police seized 100 pieces of ampoules from them in Panchbibi Upazila on October 2, 2022.
In the other case, Asadul Islam of Panchbibi was convicted after police seized 350 pieces olf ampoules from him near Gopalpur Bridge on April 24, 2022.
Police filed separate cases after the seizures. Following the presentation of evidence during the trials, the court delivered the verdict on Thursday.
NARAYANGANJ: A Narayanganj court on Thursday sentenced three people to life imprisonment for possessing 46,000 yaba tablets recovered from a passenger bus in Sonargaon.
The court also fined each of them Tk 50,000, in default of which they will have to serve two more years of rigorous imprisonment.
Narayanganj District and Sessions Judge Md Abu Shamim Azad handed down the verdict. Two of the convicts were present in court during the pronouncement, while the other was absconding.
The convicts are Md Shariful Islam alias Sharif, 35, of Main Alampur area in Maheshpur Upazila of Jhenaidah; Md Hridoy Mia alias Main Uddin, 33, of Purba Dashal area in Durgapur Upazila of Netrakona; and Md Saiful Islam, 21, of Bhawalpara in Gazipur Chankirtek area under Tongi East Police Station in Gazipur.
Shariful Islam is absconding, according to the prosecution.
According to the case details, police searched a passenger bus on the Dhaka-bound lane of the Dhaka-Chattogram Highway in Chhoto Sadipur area of Mogorapara Union in Sonargaon around 7:45pm on December 15, 2023.
During the search, police recovered 46,000 yaba tablets weighing around 4.6kg. The estimated market value of the drugs was Tk 1.38 crore.
Then Sonargaon Police Station sub-inspector Md Imran Hossain filed a case against the three accused.
After completing the investigation, police submitted a charge sheet against them. Following a lengthy trial, the court found the charges proved beyond reasonable doubt and sentenced all three to life imprisonment.
Narayanganj court police inspector Md Abdus Samad said the court handed down the sentences after the prosecution successfully proved the charges against the accused.
