BARISHAL, Oct 26: The Barishal Metropolitan Police (BMP) celebrated its 20th anniversary on Monday, with officials announcing plans to expand the number of police stations in the city from four to eight.
Divisional Commissioner Khalil Ahmed inaugurated the celebrations by releasing balloons and pigeons at around 11 am.
Speaking at the event, Khalil Ahmed said population growth, urbanisation and an increasing number of vehicles were increasing traffic congestion; at the same time, rising crime is creating new challenges for law enforcement.
He said the police were working to bring services closer to the public and sought cooperation from city residents to maintain law and order.
BMP Commissioner Abu Raihan Muhammad Saleh said the force had been providing services through four police stations since its establishment. Plans were underway to add four more stations, bringing the total to eight, he said. The expansion would help extend police services to more residents, he added.
Among those present were Deputy Inspector General of Police for Barishal Range Zulfikar Ali Haider, Deputy Commissioner Md Mamun Khandaker, SRB-8 Commander Mohammad Zakiul Karim, and Deputy Commissioners of Police Md Abdul Hannan and Sushanta Sarkar, along with journalists from print and electronic media.
Following the inauguration, a procession moved through major streets of the city. The celebrations concluded with a cake cutting ceremony.
The Barishal Metropolitan Police began its operations on October 26, 2006. It currently has around 1,800 personnel.
