Gazi Nazrul Islam, the expelled Jamaat-e-Islami leader and lawmaker from Satkhira-4, allegedly offered inducements to his driver after the driver learned about his alleged relationship with a young woman, the driver claimed at a press conference on Saturday.

Obaidur Rahman, who worked as Gazi Nazrul’s personal assistant and driver, made the allegations at a press conference at the Crime Reporters Association of Bangladesh (CRAB) office in Segunbagicha, Dhaka, around noon. He demanded the withdrawal of a case filed against him and protested what he described as an attack on him.

A video allegedly showing Gazi Nazrul in a private moment with a young woman recently circulated on social media, sparking widespread discussion. Gazi Nazrul later said the woman was his second wife. Obaidur is a relative of the woman.

Gazi Nazrul had previously alleged that Obaidur detained him at the woman’s father’s office on July 13 and extorted Tk 100,000 from him. He also accused Obaidur of leaking the video.

Obaidur, however, claimed that after discovering the alleged relationship, he confronted Gazi Nazrul. According to him, Gazi Nazrul initially offered him money and later offered him a job as both a personal assistant and a driver. Obaidur said he refused the money but accepted the driving job because he wanted to ensure the woman’s safety and collect evidence regarding the allegations.

Obaidur said he stayed with Gazi Nazrul from July 6 to 13 and attempted to gather information and evidence about the lawmaker’s activities during that period.

He claimed that he first became aware of the relationship on June 18. The following day, he spoke to the woman, who allegedly acknowledged the relationship. On June 20, Obaidur said, he took her to the MP Hostel, where he directly confronted Gazi Nazrul, who allegedly admitted to the relationship.

Obaidur further claimed that Gazi Nazrul offered him money through the woman and promised him positions as a personal assistant and driver.

He also alleged that on June 22, he saw Gazi Nazrul and the woman in an objectionable situation at a coffee shop near Pallabi Metro Rail Station, and again on July 9 at a training centre in the Mirpur-12 area. He claimed CCTV footage exists of those incidents.

According to Obaidur, he also tried to collect information about Gazi Nazrul and the woman staying at a rest house in Moghbazar on July 13. Later that night, he left Dhaka with the woman.

He said that while returning to Dhaka the following day, he contacted Gazi Nazrul and, following his instructions, met the woman’s father and a man named Aminur in the Khilkhet area.

Obaidur alleged that later that night, after he returned home, the woman’s father and Aminur attacked him, strangled him and attempted to kill him. He said he was admitted to the emergency department of Kurmitola General Hospital at 12:38am in critical condition.

Obaidur said he subsequently filed a case at Pallabi Police Station on July 21, naming several people and accusing several others anonymously. According to him, the case was later transferred to the Detective Branch (DB). Several accused were arrested but were subsequently granted bail by a court.

The allegations made at the press conference could not independently be verified from the information provided.
