JOYPURHAT, Aug 22: The July Charter must be implemented to ensure that fascism does not return to Bangladesh, Jamaat-e-Islami Secretary General and former lawmaker Mia Golam Porwar has said.
“The aspirations that drove people to the streets for change must be fulfilled through necessary reforms in the country’s political and state structures,” he said while speaking as the chief guest at the half-yearly Rukon conference of the Joypurhat district unit of Jamaat-e-Islami at Ta’limul Islam Academy and College on Saturday.
He said effective measures must be taken to ensure voting rights, justice, the rule of law and democratic freedoms while preventing any authoritarian or fascist force from capturing state power in the future.
“Implementation of the July Charter can be one of the key foundations of such a transformation,” he said.
Porwar said people were facing various political and social crises and wanted an equitable, accountable and corruption-free system of governance.
He stressed that political change should not be limited to replacing one government with another. Rather, fundamental improvements must also be made to the way the state is governed.
