A milestone in Bangladesh’s diplomatic journey, August 24 marks the day Panama and Uruguay recognized the country as an independent state.

Following the nine-month long war of liberation in 1971, Bangladesh attained the status of an independent and sovereign state.

In order to gain recognition as a sovereign nation in the world after independence, efforts were made diplomatically.

On August 24, 1972, two Latin American states, namely, Panama and Uruguay recognized Bangladesh as an independent state.

Final success was attained over Pakistan by December 16, 1971. Recognition from various nations was essential for strengthening the position of Bangladesh in the international arena.

This was a significant step towards the diplomatic recognition of Bangladesh as an independent nation.
