AI cameras to be introduced in 50 more Dhaka signals

More than 50 intersections of Dhaka city are to be supervised under AI camera surveillance system, according to official sources.

Among them, 28 signals will be installed in Dhaka North City Corporation and 22 in Dhaka South City Corporation.

Previously, semi-automated traffic signals were installed at 13 points in the capital under the supervision of BUET to restore discipline on the roads. Artificial Intelligence (AI) cameras were experimentally added to several of these signals.

Drivers expressed support for the move. Many said fear of automated fines have made them cautious, calling it a positive government initiative.

Transportation expert Dr. Hadiuzzaman said the newly installed system is fully automated and requires no manual operator. It operates on demand-responsive technology while allowing traffic police officers to make adjustments using hand-held tablets if necessary.

Additional Commissioner of Dhaka Metropolitan Police Md Anisur Rahman said bringing people into a disciplined framework from a preconceived mindset takes time. He expressed satisfaction that the public has welcomed the initiative.

However, stakeholders have mixed opinions regarding the AI-integrated signalling system. Experts warned that the desired benefits will not be achieved unless unfit and illegal vehicles are controlled on the roads.

Traffic Sergeant Tariqul pointed out that the AI signal system struggles to function effectively in areas with rampant jaywalking or battery-powered rickshaws.

Meanwhile, new manpower has been recruited to operate these new signals, increasing project costs. Police stated that a specialized team, named the Traffic Technical Unit, is being trained to handle the operations.
