Remembering Syed Mustafa Siraj on his birth anniversary

One of the greatest storytellers of Bengali literature, Syed Mustafa Siraj, is being remembered today on his birth anniversary. He introduced the rough terrain of the Rarh area and the pleasures and trials of the riverside people in his writings in mainstream Bengali literature.

Siraj’s works were influenced in many ways by his varied life experiences. During his younger days, he toured around Rarh along with the folk theatre group known as Alkap, getting acquainted with the culture and people of the place. As an adult, along with journalism, he developed his own unique identity in Bengali literature.

Trinabhumi, Mayamridanga and Uttar Jahnabi, his novels, gave an authentic portrayal of marginalised communities. The famous novel ‘Alik Manush’ of his gained a lot of recognition because of the way he delved into the psychological side of religious orthodoxies, weakness of humans and their spiritual crisis in life. He was awarded the Sahitya Akademi Award in 1994 for this novel.

Apart from this, Siraj earned great popularity amongst the generations of readers for his famous detective named Colonel Niladri Sarkar whose stories mixed up with the mystery and love for nature.
