11-Party alliance to hold Dhaka-Chattogram long March on September 5

The Jamaat-e-Islami-led 11-party alliance will hold a meeting with Inspector General of Police (IGP) on Monday evening to seek police cooperation for ensuring a peaceful, disciplined and trouble-free Dhaka-Chattogram long march scheduled for September 5.
The alliance leaders are scheduled to meet the IGP at Police Headquarters at 7:00pm on Monday (August 24). After the meeting, they will brief journalists in front of Police Headquarters.
Dr AHM Hamidur Rahman Azad, coordinator of the 11-party alliance and assistant secretary general of Jamaat-e-Islami, confirmed the matter.
According to alliance sources, the long march from Dhaka to Chattogram has been announced to press for implementation of the referendum verdict, necessary reforms to the state structure and other political demands related to eliminating discrimination. Preparations for the programme have already begun.
At a meeting of the long march implementation committee on August 17, emphasis was placed on involving the general public alongside party leaders and activists. The meeting also decided to intensify preparations, publicity and organisational activities surrounding the programme.
The alliance leaders said the programme is not aimed merely at holding a political gathering. Rather, they consider the long march an important part of their ongoing political campaign to create pressure for implementing the people's verdict in the referendum and carrying out state reforms.
As part of the preparations, alliance leaders have held meetings at various levels and taken initiatives to ensure participation of leaders, activists and supporters from Dhaka and different areas along the route. They have also emphasised preventing disorder and public suffering during the programme.
Jamaat Secretary General Mia Golam Parwar said the meeting with the IGP would discuss the long march route, security of participants, traffic movement and the overall law-and-order situation. The alliance will seek police cooperation to ensure discipline and security.
Dr AHM Hamidur Rahman Azad said the meeting with the IGP was being arranged to ensure that the September 5 Dhaka-Chattogram long march is held peacefully, in a disciplined manner and without disruption. The alliance leaders will provide details to journalists after the meeting at Police Headquarters.
Alliance sources said the meeting with the police leadership was arranged to coordinate with law-enforcement agencies ahead of the major political programme and to help ensure its peaceful execution.
