Khaleda Zia Convoy Attack: ‘Handless Kashem’ remanded

A Dhaka court on Tuesday placed Mohammad Abul Kashem Patowary, president of the Tejgaon unit of Jatiya Sramik League, on a five-day remand in a case filed over an alleged attack on former prime minister Khaleda Zia’s motorcade.

Metropolitan Magistrate Ariful Islam passed the order after hearing a seven-day remand petition filed by the investigation officer.

Kashem, also known as “Handless Kashem,” was arrested from Karwan Bazar on August 17. He was sent to jail the following day after his bail petition was rejected.

The case relates to an alleged attack on Khaleda Zia’s motorcade in Karwan Bazar on April 20, 2015, when she was campaigning for BNP mayoral candidate Tabith Awal in the Dhaka North City Corporation election.

The prosecution sought remand, saying interrogation could help identify those allegedly involved in planning the attack. Kashem’s lawyers opposed the plea, arguing that there were no specific allegations against him and citing his physical disabilities.

The court ultimately granted five days remand.

The case was filed in August 2024 against former prime minister Sheikh Hasina and 112 others. Other accused include former home minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal and several leaders of the Awami League and its affiliated organisations.
