One of the most widely discussed and long-unresolved murder cases in Bangladesh’s political history is set to take a new turn as authorities move to revive the investigation into the killing of former president and BNP founder Ziaur Rahman.

The case, which was closed about a decade ago due to a lack of sufficient evidence, is now being revived following the recent arrest of one of its key absconding accused. Law enforcement agencies have renewed efforts to uncover the circumstances and alleged masterminds behind the political assassination that remained unresolved for more than four decades.

The murder case, related to the killing of Ziaur Rahman 45 years ago, is now officially being brought back into focus. Although proceedings were halted by a Chattogram court citing insufficient evidence, the recent arrest of a fugitive accused has changed the course of the case.

Last July, a team of the Dhaka Metropolitan Police’s Detective Branch arrested retired Major Mozzafar Hossain, who had been on the run for years, from the Banani DOHS area of the capital following a tip-off.

After completing the necessary legal procedures, he was formally handed over to the Bangladesh Army for court-martial proceedings. The military officer had remained in hiding since the assassination of then-president Ziaur Rahman at the Chattogram Circuit House on May 30, 1981.

According to historical accounts, Major Mozzafar Hossain allegedly opened fire on the then-president and later informed Major General Abul Manzur, the GOC, about the incident over the telephone.

The accused reportedly spent years hiding in India and later moved to different parts of Bangladesh under false identities. His arrest is expected to shed light on several previously unanswered questions surrounding the high-profile political assassination and could provide new leads in the long-running case.
