Dhaka University (DU) has honoured 62 teachers and researchers who have received at least 2,000 citations on their Google Scholar profiles for their outstanding contributions to research and for enhancing the university’s international visibility.
The honours were conferred at a ceremony held at the Nawab Nawab Ali Chowdhury Senate Building on Thursday, with DU Vice-Chancellor (VC) Prof Dr ABM Obaidul Islam presenting the awards as the chief guest.
Pro-VC (Education) Prof Dr Abdus Salam chaired the programme. Pro-VC (Administration) Prof Dr Mohammad Almozaddeed Alfechani, Treasurer Prof Dr M Jahangir Alam Chowdhury and former vc Prof Dr Niaz Ahmed Khan also addressed the event.
Prof Dr Md Anwarul Islam of the Department of Information Science and Library Management gave a presentation on the importance of research and citations.
DU VC said researchers must play a leading role in transforming DU into a research-oriented institution and strengthening its position in international rankings.
He said government funding alone was insufficient and stressed the need for greater support from alumni and the industry.
The VC said a 20-year academic development plan was being prepared, along with plans to establish funds of Tk1,000 crore each for research and student welfare.
