Opposition Chief Whip and National Citizen Party (NCP) Convener Nahid Islam accused the government of attempting to evade allegations of fertiliser crisis despite farmers facing difficulties in obtaining fertiliser.

He also said the Opposition alliance would march from Shahbagh to Parliament on August 30 in protest against what he described as a weak legal framework for preventing enforced disappearances.

Nahid made the remarks at a briefing following a summit meeting of the 11-party Opposition alliance led by Jamaat-e-Islami on Wednesday.

The meeting, held at the residence of the Opposition Leader on Minto Road in the capital, discussed the electricity, fuel and fertiliser crisis, the deteriorating law and order situation and the alliance’s future programmes. Senior leaders of the alliance attended the meeting.

At the subsequent press conference, Nahid alleged that the government was preparing draft legislation on the National Human Rights Commission and enforced disappearances in violation of international standards.

“Although farmers are suffering due to the fertiliser crisis, the government is trying to avoid these allegations,” he said.

He said the opposition alliance would observe the International Day for the Prevention of Enforced Disappearances on August 30 through a programme in the capital.

“We will spontaneously participate in the International Day for the Prevention of Enforced Disappearances on the 30th, and we, the opposition party members of Parliament, will speak in a parliamentary manner in the session on Thursday (August 27),” Nahid said.
