China to supply electricity to national grid at Tk 25 per unit

A Chinese company developing a waste-to-energy project at the Aminbazar landfill in Dhaka will supply 42 megawatts of electricity to Bangladesh's national grid at a rate of Tk 25 per unit, with target operations beginning within the next 18 months.

State Minister for Local Government, Rural Development and Co-operatives Mir Shahe Alam disclosed the information on Thursday following a courtesy meeting between LGRD Minister Dr Abdul Moyeen Khan and Chinese Ambassador to Bangladesh Yao Wen at the Secretariat.

Alam confirmed that China will supply 42 MW of electricity generated from municipal waste to the national grid within one and a half years.

He announced that the formal tripartite agreement for the project is scheduled to be signed on September 2 in Beijing, China. Initial agreements among relevant parties have already been completed, while the final financing contract will be executed between the investor bank, the operating company, and Bangladeshi authorities.

Addressing the tariff rate, the state minister acknowledged that while purchasing power at Tk 25 per unit appears costly, the broader environmental and municipal benefits offset the expense.

Furthermore, the state minister noted that another firm, PowerChina, has approached the government.

Authorities requested Chinese officials to expedite proposals for a similar waste-to-energy plant at the Dhaka South City Corporation landfill, which holds the potential to generate an additional 40 to 50 MW of power daily for the national grid.
