Another flood feared in Nepal amid ongoing disaster

Nepal is facing the threat of another devastating flood even as the country continues to grapple with the aftermath of a catastrophic disaster along the Nepal-Tibet border.
Experts have warned that the risk has not yet passed, as a debris blockage remains upstream of a river near the Nepal-China border.
The warning was issued by Jiangong Zhang, head of the Climate and Environmental Risks division at the Kathmandu-based International Centre for Integrated Mountain Development (ICIMOD).
He said the debris blockage could collapse, potentially triggering another major flood in the region.
Glaciers are melting rapidly worldwide due to climate change, increasing the risk of glacial lake outburst floods and glacier collapses.
The latest disaster along the Nepal-Tibet border has once again highlighted the devastating consequences of these risks.
When glacier collapses, flash floods and powerful debris flows in mountain rivers occur simultaneously, they can cause widespread destruction within minutes.
Nepal Police said Thursday afternoon that the death toll from the disaster had risen to 359.
China’s state media reported three additional deaths on the Tibetan side of the border, bringing the combined death toll in the two countries to at least 362.
Nearly 1,000 people remain missing, including a significant number of foreign tourists.
Rescue operations are still underway.
According to Nepal’s disaster management authorities, when the death toll stood at 273, authorities were unable to establish contact with 823 people. Among them were 579 Nepali nationals and foreign tourists.
China’s Foreign Ministry had earlier said around 100 Chinese nationals were among those missing.
However, rescuers later found around 100 Indian tourists and 25 Chinese workers in Nepal.
Hundreds of people are also reportedly missing in Tibet, according to Chinese state media.
Chinese state media reported that 558 people remain missing in Tibet, including 260 foreign nationals.
