Food Minister warns of tough action against syndicates

Food Minister Afroza Khanam Rita issued a strong warning that no irregularities, corruption, or mismanagement regarding food grain stocks in government warehouses will be tolerated.

Speaking in an interview on Friday (August 28), the minister emphasized that anyone involved in warehouse-centric syndicates or corrupt practices will face strict legal action, along with their patrons.

The Food Minister stated that government food warehouses across all 64 districts will be systematically audited. Strict measures will be taken if discrepancies in stock figures, misappropriation of food grains, or storage irregularities are uncovered. She reiterated that negligence or corruption regarding national food security will not be permitted.

The minister pledged zero tolerance regarding food safety across all age groups, aligning with the Prime Minister's election manifesto to build a self-reliant and sustainable Bangladesh.

She added that the government plans to modernize food testing laboratories and align quality control mechanisms with international standards to achieve a permanent solution rather than relying solely on temporary drives.

Highlighting a recent drive in Manikganj, the minister referenced the Ghior government food warehouse incident where significant shortages of rice and wheat were discovered.

The Food Minister stressed that discrepancies between paper records and physical inventory will no longer be tolerated. All officials responsible for storage and supervision will be held accountable.

Reaffirming the government's priorities, the minister stated that achieving self-sufficiency under Prime Minister Tarique Rahman’s guidance requires absolute transparency and accountability.

Surveillance over food grain procurement, storage, and distribution will be strengthened continuously to eliminate corrupt practices and dismantle syndicates.
