Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami has denied media reports alleging that its Secretary General Mia Golam Parwar held a secret meeting with officials of a foreign intelligence agency, describing the claims as “false, imaginary and baseless”.
In a statement sent to the media on Tuesday, the party strongly protested the reports, alleging that they were part of a planned campaign to damage its political standing and reputation.
The statement was issued by Jamaat Assistant Secretary General and Central Publicity and Media Secretary Advocate Ahsanul Mahbub Zubair.
Zubair said the party conducts its political activities through democratic and constitutional means while maintaining normal diplomatic relations with countries around the world without compromising Bangladesh’s dignity and sovereignty.
He challenged those who had made the allegations to present conclusive evidence in support of their claims, saying attempts to discredit the party’s top leaders through fabricated accusations would not succeed.
The statement also stressed that media outlets have a professional responsibility to independently verify the accuracy of information on sensitive issues involving national interests. It urged the public not to be misled by what it described as politically motivated misinformation.
The denial followed allegations made on social media on Monday and Tuesday by Prime Minister’s Political Assistant Rashed Khan, who accused Golam Parwar and two other Jamaat leaders of holding a secret meeting with a senior Indian intelligence official at a residence in Baridhara, Dhaka.
Khan shared a video on his Facebook account, claiming it showed a vehicle carrying Jamaat leaders leaving the residence after the alleged meeting. He publicly challenged Golam Parwar over the allegation and said he would face a defamation case if he sued him.
However, Khan did not provide clear information about when the video was recorded or who was inside the vehicle, according to the report.
