The foundation stone of the proposed Laldia Container Terminal in Patenga will be laid on Sunday to boost Chattogram Port's capacity and modernise its infrastructure.
Shipping, Road Transport and Bridges, and Railways Minister Sheikh Rabiul Alam will inaugurate the construction work at the Laldia project site at 11 AM, according to a Shipping Ministry press release issued on Saturday.
The terminal is being developed with Danish assistance to increase the port's capacity and support the country's growing foreign trade.
The ministry said the new terminal would help reduce pressure on Chattogram Port's existing infrastructure and increase its container handling and transportation capacity.
The project also aims to improve ship and cargo management through modern infrastructure and technology-based operations.
Once operational, the terminal is expected to make port operations more efficient, reduce the time required to transport import and export cargo, and strengthen Bangladesh's logistics capacity and competitiveness in international trade.
Representatives of government ministries, the Chattogram Port Authority, local and foreign organisations, business leaders and media personnel are expected to attend the foundation stone-laying ceremony.
