BCB plans medical overhaul to strengthen player care

The Bangladesh Cricket Board is preparing a major overhaul of its medical support system, with plans to establish a modern sports medicine and rehabilitation centre aimed at improving injury management across the country's cricket structure.

The proposed facility is expected to bring several medical services under a more organised framework, including emergency care, outpatient treatment, rehabilitation and player observation.

BCB Medical Committee chairman Dr Sarker Mahbub Ahmed Shamim has outlined the plan as part of a broader effort to strengthen medical support for Bangladesh's cricketers.

The proposed overhaul comes after recurring concerns over injury management and the availability of specialised medical facilities for players. The new system is intended to provide quicker assessment, better rehabilitation and closer monitoring during recovery.

The plan is not limited to the national men's team. A stronger medical structure could also benefit the women's team, High Performance programme and age-group players, creating a more consistent approach to injury care throughout the cricket pathway.

The proposed centre would also reduce the need to manage every medical issue through separate facilities, allowing the board to develop a dedicated environment for sports-related treatment and rehabilitation.

For Bangladesh, the timing is significant. The country's cricket calendar continues to expand across international, domestic and development competitions, increasing the physical demands on players.

The BCB's recent emphasis on professionalising other areas of the game-from curator education to player development-has now extended to medical care.

The objective is not simply to treat injuries after they occur, but to improve the process from diagnosis to rehabilitation and eventual return to competitive cricket.

If implemented successfully, the new structure could become an important part of Bangladesh's long-term player development system.

For a cricket programme seeking greater consistency on the field, the BCB now wants to build the same level of discipline and professionalism behind the scenes-starting with how it looks after its players.
