Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC) Administrator Bir Muktijoddha Md Abdus Salam has said meat sold at designated shops must carry an inspection seal from the city corporation’s health officials.

He said consumers will be able to identify inspected meat by checking the seal.

The DSCC administrator made the remarks after inaugurating a modern slaughterhouse in Hazaribagh in the capital on Monday (August 31).

Abdus Salam said meat without the DSCC seal would be seized, while action would be taken against shops selling meat from animals slaughtered illegally.

He said animals cannot be slaughtered at markets or other unauthorised locations outside designated slaughterhouses. Anyone slaughtering animals at an unauthorised place will be fined, while shops found selling illegally slaughtered meat will be shut down.

The administrator said slaughtering animals at designated facilities is necessary to ensure that the animals were healthy and properly slaughtered. It would also help prevent cases where buffalo meat is sold as beef, he added.

He also said health officials and staff must be present during slaughtering at the designated facilities. Disciplinary action will be taken against officials found absent from their assigned duties, he added.
