A proposal has been made to give constitutional recognition to the July uprising and restore the referendum provision for major constitutional amendments.
The proposal was placed at the sixth meeting of the special committee on constitutional amendments of the 13th Jatiya Sangsad on Tuesday (October 6), chaired by committee chairman and Home Minister Salahuddin Ahmed.
Representatives of families of those killed and injured July fighters also proposed incorporating the July Declaration into the Constitution, ensuring legal protection for July fighters, expediting trials of genocide and crimes against humanity, and providing improved treatment and rehabilitation for the injured.
The meeting also discussed reforms to the judiciary and Election Commission and the caretaker government system to strengthen democratic institutions.
The participants proposed restoring the referendum provision to allow citizens to give their mandate on major constitutional changes. They also called for ensuring a safe and non-discriminatory political environment for women, recognising their significant role in the July uprising.
Committee sources said the proposals had been taken into consideration, while further written proposals on constitutional amendments were invited.
