Schools closed in Pakistan as heavy rain triggers flooding

Authorities in Rawalpindi declared a holiday for educational institutions on Tuesday after heavy rain inundated low-lying areas, raised water levels in Leh Nullah and triggered urban flooding risks in the twin cities of Rawalpindi and Islamabad.

The Pakistan Meteorological Department said the water level in Leh Nullah rose to 29 feet at Kattarian and 23.5 feet at Gawalmandi, prompting evacuations in nearby areas.

Around 200mm of rain was recorded in the nullah's catchment areas, while heavy rainfall was also reported across several parts of Rawalpindi and Islamabad.

Rawalpindi authorities declared a public holiday for educational institutions and urged residents to avoid unnecessary travel.

Rescue 1122 said it had evacuated 60 people from several affected areas, while efforts were continuing to rescue residents stranded inside their homes.

In Islamabad, authorities said the water level at Rawal Dam had exceeded the prescribed limit, prompting plans to open its spillways. Residents were advised to stay away from nullahs and other water channels.

The heavy rain also caused overflowing drains and waterlogging on several roads, disrupting traffic across the twin cities. Islamabad traffic police advised motorists to drive cautiously and allow extra travel time.

Pakistan's meteorological authorities have warned of continued heavy monsoon rain in parts of the country until September 5, with a risk of urban flooding in several low-lying areas.
