US sailors shop in Pattaya before hitting the bars

After spending a record 286 consecutive days at sea aboard the USS 'Abraham Lincoln', nearly 5,000 US Navy sailors and Marines have arrived in Thailand’s Pattaya for a five-day rest and recuperation break.
Rather than heading straight to the city’s nightlife venues, many of the sailors spent their first few hours shopping and walking around the resort city. Several were seen carrying shopping bags near the Hard Rock Hotel, while others explored the streets and beachfront.
As night fell, Pattaya’s famous neon-lit nightlife became increasingly busy. Local businesses have welcomed the arrival of the US personnel, hoping their spending will provide a boost to tourism and businesses that have faced a slowdown amid the conflict in the Middle East. The sailors were also welcomed by a large illuminated sign at the entrance to the city’s famous Walking Street.
Thai authorities have issued guidelines to the visiting personnel, while special shore liaison teams have been deployed to help maintain discipline and coordinate with local authorities. US Navy officials said the sailors are expected to comply with US military regulations as well as Thai law.
The prolonged deployment has also raised concerns about the sailors’ morale and wellbeing. Families of crew members have expressed relief at the opportunity for their loved ones to rest before eventually returning home. The Pattaya visit is part of a planned break for the crew after their extended deployment in the Middle East.
