96 migrants detained on Bosnia-Croatia border

Bosnia and Herzegovina border police have detained 96 migrants attempting to enter EU member Croatia irregularly, including 36 Bangladeshis, 42 Pakistanis and 18 Afghans.

The migrants were detained in two operations near Bistrica in northern Bosnia on Wednesday, September 2, according to the country’s border police.

In the first operation, 63 people were detained, including 40 Pakistanis and 23 Bangladeshis. A further 33 were detained in the second operation, including 13 Bangladeshis, two Pakistanis and 18 Afghans.

Police said the two attempts were detected during a border surveillance operation. Two boats allegedly prepared for the migrants were seized, and two people suspected of involvement in human trafficking were identified.

The incident was reported to the Banja Luka Field Centre of Bosnia’s Foreign Affairs Service for further investigation and action.

The development came days after a migrant boat sank in the Una River near the Bosnia-Croatia border on August 31, leaving one person dead and several others missing. Two people were rescued alive, including a Chinese national, while a Bosnian citizen was arrested on suspicion of human trafficking.

Croatia is a key transit country for migrants using the Balkan route to reach the European Union, with many attempting to enter the country through Bosnia and Herzegovina.

According to EU border agency Frontex, more than 4,900 irregular border crossings were detected on the Western Balkan route in the first seven months of this year, down 26 per cent from the same period last year.

Frontex recorded more than 12,500 migrants reaching Europe via the Balkan route in 2025. The International Organization for Migration says more than 400 people have died or gone missing on the route since 2014.
